The major of Electrical Engineering and Automation belongs to the electrical category in the field of engineering. It is a major that combines strong electricity (with electricity as the energy carrier) and weak electricity (with electricity as the information carrier). It mainly studies the basic knowledge and skills in related fields such as power electronics technology, power system analysis, high voltage technology, automatic control technology, and computer technology, and is engaged in the design and manufacturing of electrical equipment, the development of automatic control technology, and the operation and maintenance of power systems.

The Electrical Engineering and Automation major of Yangtze University is one of the majors established relatively early in China to cultivate electrical information technical talents for the petroleum industry. Over the years, based in Jingzhou, Hubei, this major has cultivated nearly 1,500 qualified graduates engaged in the field of electrical automation for the national petroleum and petrochemical industry and the power system industry. In 2016, the Electrical Engineering and Automation major was approved as the Jingchu Excellent Engineer Program in Hubei Province.
